You Can’t Serve From a Distance: Community Driven Approaches and Minority Mental Health
You Can’t Serve from a Distance: Community-Driven Approaches and Minority Mental Health examines the importance of locally grounded, culturally responsive strategies in addressing mental health disparities among marginalized populations. Traditional mental health systems often rely on top-down approaches that overlook lived experiences, structural barriers, and the cultural contexts of minority communities. This presentation advocates for the decolonization of mental health practices by challenging organizations to move beyond positions of authority and become accountable members of the communities they serve. It explores how trust, shared power, and cultural humility are essential to effective community engagement. Additionally, the presentation examines how “community” is defined across cultures and how collectivist and individualist values can coexist within the same community. By centering community knowledge and relationships, this work emphasizes proximity and collaboration.
