Raising Native Youth Voices: Presectives on Youth Attorney Representation in Tribal Court
How can we assure that the voices of Native youth are heard when considering the best interests of the child in a dependency proceeding? This presentation will emphasize the importance of culturally competent legal representation for Native youth in dependency cases and highlight the success of this work in the Tulalip Tribal Community. Through the perspectives of youth and agency attorneys, Tribal court judges, and Native youth testimonials attendees will learn how effective collaboration can center and raise Native youth voices in dependency proceedings. It will highlight considerations for culturally appropriate and holistic representation of Native youth in Tribal communities as well as provide suggestions for implementing similar practices in other courts and communities.
