Manipulation & Grooming in Child Abuse Investigations

Suspects use a number of behaviors to gain the cooperation and trust of their victims and victim families. When working child abuse investigations, it is critical to identify and understand the grooming techniques used to manipulate both children and caregivers. Investigators must also be prepared to explain the dynamics of grooming in both criminal and family court hearings. In this presentation, we discuss those tactics used by child sexual abuse suspects to gain the necessary access to their victims. We will discuss proper investigative documention of those tactics and how best to present them in court.
