Equipping the Workforce to Improve Outcomes for Native American Families
Inconsistent implementation of ICWA’s Active Efforts requirement continues to create gaps in support for American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) families affected by substance use. This session introduces the ICWA Active Efforts Support Toolkit (IAST) as a practical, systems‑level resource designed to strengthen compliance, collaboration, and culturally responsive practice.
Participants will explore how the IAST Toolkit supports child welfare agencies, courts, treatment providers, and Tribal partners in preventing unnecessary family separation and promoting safe, timely reunification when court involvement is required. Presenters will highlight the toolkit’s core components—the IAST Guidance Document, IAST Tool, and IAST Learning Modules—and demonstrate how these resources build shared understanding, provide actionable strategies, and support workforce development.
Attendees will leave better equipped to implement meaningful Active Efforts that honor Tribal sovereignty.
