Children in the Courtroom Training Series Part 1: How Do Lawyers Represent Children?
The first of a comprehensive series of trainings concerning the participation of children and youth in their dependency cases, this session covers the ethical considerations, representation models, and standards of practice informing the legal representation of dependent children in Washington State. Judges, social workers, GAL/CASAs and attorneys all have distinct roles to play in a child’s dependency case. Participants of this session will learn about the unique representation models specifically employed by lawyers for children ages 0-17; the ethical considerations surrounding the representation of children; and the prevailing standards of practice that inform an attorney’s work. If you have ever wondered how an attorney can effectively represent an infant, whether attorneys for children are mandated reporters, or how an attorney handles those situations where the child wants advocacy for something that does not align with their “best interest”, then this session is for you!
