Speakers

Welcome Speaker

WA Attorney General Bob Ferguson
Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson
Bob Ferguson is Washington State’s 18th Attorney General. As the state’s chief legal officer, Bob is committed to protecting the people of Washington against powerful interests that don’t play by the rules. He is a 4th-generation Washingtonian, a graduate of the University of Washington and New York University law school. Bob and his wife, Colleen, are the proud parents of 16-year-old twins Jack and Katie.

Plenary Speaker

Rep. Tarra Simmons, D-Bremerton
Rep. Tarra Simmons, D-Bremerton
Rep. Simmons represents the 23rd District, which includes Bainbridge Island and the north Kitsap Peninsula. She is also the co-founder of the Civil Survival Project, a program that provides legal services and advocacy for formerly incarcerated people. The issue is personal to her. She is the first formerly incarcerated person to hold state-level elected office in Washington. A Seattle University Law School graduate, Rep. Simmons was refused entry to the Washington State Bar because of her past. Rep. Simmons took a stand for everyone who has been incarcerated and challenged the Bar all the way to the State Supreme Court, where she won a unanimous, same-day decision. As Vice Chair of the Community Safety, Justice & Reentry Committee and member of the Healthcare & Wellness and Appropriations committees in the Legislature, Rep. Simmons brings true lived experience to Olympia, where she fights to reduce incarceration, increase access to behavioral and mental health, and ease the re-entry of formerly incarcerated people back into society.

Keynote Speaker

Hasan Davis J.D.
Hasan Davis J.D.
Hasan Davis, a resilient individual who overcame early legal challenges, expulsion from an alternative school, and learning and behavior difficulties, transformed his life by obtaining his GED and pursuing higher education. Despite being expelled twice from Berea College, he returned with determination, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and a Juris Doctor from the University of Kentucky College of Law. Recognized for his exceptional service in various fields, Hasan is a Rockefeller Foundation-Next Generation Leadership Fellow, a Council of State Governments-Henry Toll Fellow, an EdTrust-Family Education Fellow, and an Annie E. Casey-Children and Family Fellow. Leading youth service organizations, he firmly believes in nurturing hope for children’s success. As Kentucky’s fifth Commissioner of Juvenile Justice in 2012, Hasan played a pivotal role in reforming the state’s juvenile justice system. Founder of Hasan Davis Solutions in 2015, he continues his national work supporting youth and families through engaging, coaching, and training experiences. Additionally, Hasan is an accomplished author of four books and an actor known for his living history programs that highlight the often overlooked contributions of African Americans to America’s history. He resides in Berea, Kentucky, with his wife Dreama, a Rural Access and Education expert, and their two college-age sons.
Calling all Hope Dealers: A Transformational Journey from J.D. to J.D.

Join Hasan on his harrowing journey through the education, justice, and social service systems. Systems that too often failed to provide him the support he needed to navigate beyond crisis and find success. Luckily, on his journey, there were outliers and resistors like you within each system, champions that Hasan affectionately calls “hope dealers,” who found a way to engage, encourage, and empower him. With their support, he could transcend his mounting list of “failures” and become a fierce self-advocate and eventually a champion for youth. Hasan believes that each person in the community has the opportunity and the responsibility to influence and improve how youth encounter the education, justice, and social service systems. So, buckle up as Hasan shares his story of transformation and highlights a few of the Hope Dealers who, along the way, imagined his possibility instead of focusing on his problems. He will share examples of the courageous strategies that helped him accomplish what he calls “the J.D. Shuffle,” going from Hasan Davis Juvenile Delinquent to Hasan Davis Juris Doctor.
